Chinese electric carmaker BYD is in talks to open car dealerships in Canada. BYD plans to start in the Greater Toronto Area as it prepares to enter the Canadian market under new import rules. Canada recently lowered tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, making it easier for companies like BYD to sell their cars in the country.

According to a report in The Globe and Mail, a business consultant in Ontario explained that BYD plans to open about 20 dealerships within a year. The first ones are expected to open in Toronto and then expand to Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary.

The discussions are still at an early stage, and BYD is reviewing possible locations for its showrooms. Dealer Solutions Mergers & Acquisitions, a company in Markham, Ontario that helps car dealers to expand and grow in Canada, said it has already suggested three possible locations for BYD dealerships. Other Chinese automakers are also talking with the same group about building dealerships in Canada.

This move comes after the Canadian government decided in January to lower tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles from very high rates to around 6.1%. However, the reduced tariffs only apply to a limited number of cars under a new quota system. This change is meant to help more electric vehicles reach Canadian roads.

Canada changed its policy as the federal government works to provide more electric cars for Canadian drivers while also supporting local auto jobs and the national car industry. Some Canadian automakers have warned that cheaper imports could create pressure, but others say that more options and competition could be good for customers.

BYD is a major automaker in the global EV market and one of the largest electric vehicle producers in the world. It sells a lot of models internationally and has expanded sales and dealership networks in multiple countries. Entering Canada would be a significant step as it targets the North American market.

If BYD successfully opens its planned dealerships, drivers in Canada will have more options when buying electric vehicles. BYD’s cars are usually cheaper than some established brands, which could make them attractive to consumers who want electric vehicles in less budget. This could push other carmakers to lower their prices or offer better deals to stay competitive.

Industry experts say that if BYD opens showrooms in major Canadian cities, it could encourage other Chinese car brands to explore international markets. This would give customers more options and could speed up the shift to electric vehicles across the country, helping more Canadians access affordable and modern EVs.

Availability of local dealerships could also make it easier for customers to test drive, service, and repair their EVs, which can be a major factor in buying decisions. Having official stores and service centers could help build trust in the brand among Canadian buyers.

The discussions are ongoing, and BYD has not publicly confirmed exact locations or opening dates yet. However, if the plan moves forward, Canadian drivers could start seeing BYD vehicles in showrooms later this year.
