JD Vance Arrives in Switzerland for High-Stakes Iran Talks

Vice President of the US JD Vance landed in Switzerland on Sunday. He came for big talks with Iran. The discussions are focused on making the ceasefire agreement more stable. Leaders signed that ceasefire on Wednesday.

The trip faced challenges from the start. Iran claimed it had closed the Strait of Hormuz again, due continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon. But, the United States rejected that claim. U.S. Central Command said the strait remained open and reported that 55 commercial ships carrying more than 17 million barrels of oil passed through the strait on Saturday.

This disagreement over facts points to a bigger issue. The peace deal between Iran and the U.S. has cracks in it. Pakistan helped both sides reach this peace deal. Both countries agreed to a 60-day ceasefire. This time is meant to give both sides a chance to work toward a lasting peace agreement. The conflict between them lasted for almost four months before this pause.

Even as peace talks were in progress, violence resumed as Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters exchanged fire again. On Saturday, Lebanon’s health authorities said that Israeli airstrikes killed 20 people within just one day.

Vance explained his main goals for the trip. He said two key issues are most important right now. The first goal is to slow down Iran’s nuclear program. The second goal is to secure a real ceasefire in Lebanon that can last. The talks are taking place in Bürgenstock(Swiss mountains). Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi is taking part in the discussions, while Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also attending the meeting.

Iran’s side also has its own set of demands. Mohammad Mokhber, a senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, spoke about the situation. He said the first and most important step is clear: all fighting must stop. He added that this includes the ongoing violence in Lebanon.

The Strait of Hormuz is very important sea route. Before this war started in February, this narrow waterway carried large amounts of oil every day. Around one-fifth of the world’s total oil supply passed through it daily. This makes it one of the most important shipping routes in the world.

President Trump made a promise about money and tolls. He said ships would not have to pay any toll to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. This arrangement will remain in place for the full 60 days of the ceasefire. However, there is a condition attached to this promise. The agreement will stay in effect only if the peace talks are successful.

Trump also gave a warning on social media. He said if these talks fail, the situation could change quickly. He hinted that United States could impose tolls on other countries. He used a strong phrase to describe this idea. He called it payment “for services rendered as the guardian angel to the countries of the Middle East.”

The world is now waiting to see what happens next in these high-stakes talks. Both sides are under pressure to turn this fragile pause into a lasting peace,
